“Hollywood… the place where movies and television are filmed and stars are discovered.  When I searched for inspiration to create a stunning beauty editorial for Issue #33 of BELLO MAG, I reminisced about the iconic beauties that have been burned into my mind through decades of films and entertainment.  From the most iconic blonde sex symbol of the silver screen, to the beloved actress with the jet black hair and uniquely violet eyes- I wanted to take this opportunity to create magic with my makeup skills by transforming one modern model named Jade into 4 distinctly different portraits of beauty heroines.  Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, Marilyn Monroe in “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”, Elizabeth Taylor in “Cleopatra”, and Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret”.
PART 3 of my video series takes you behind the scenes and shows you the magic behind transforming my muse, Jade Corinne, into Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Look for PART 1 w Marilyn Monroe and PART 2 w Audrey Hepburn.

—Mathias has been working as a celebrity makeup artist/hairstylist for over 10 years and his work can be seen on E! Networks’ The Soup and The Fashion Police. He has also worked on music videos with Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani and has painted the faces of celebrities such as Evan Rachel Wood, Geena Davis, and Nadia Bjorlin.

The 2012 People’s Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles this week at the Nokia Theater. Kaley Cuoco, star of “The Big Bang Theory” was the hostess and she definitely had the most costume and hair changes throughout the evening, I think I counted at least 6!!! Many wonderful actors and actresses walked the red carpet, but a few were wearing makeup and hair that really caught my eye.

Leah Michelle, who won the award for “Favorite TV Comedy Actress” for her work in GLEE, chose a bright fuschia lip color. That was the most daring lip shade I spotted on the carpet that night and I really think it went well with the oyster colored 1920’s flapper inspired tea length dress. She kept the rest of her makeup very neutral, opting for a pinky taupe blush and eyes bare of any discernable color but loads of mascara to really emphasize her lashes.

To achieve a similar look to Leah’s try-

MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation

NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in FUNNY FACE

ANASTASIA HydraFull gloss in SUGAR PINK

CARGO blu_ray Blush/Hilighter in PINK SHIMMER

Ashley Greene was a presenter of the “Favorite Movie Drama” at the awards and I particularly loved her hair length, style, and wave. I’ve worked with Ashley before, and I can honestly say she has perfect skin and beautiful bone structure. Her hair looked very shiny and healthy, and I loved the length. It was just past her shoulders and curled in a way that didn’t look messy or beachy, and the way it was left all down kept it from going “wedding hair” if you know what I’m talking about.

Here are my recommendations for achieving Ashley’s hairstyle

BUMBLE AND BUMBLE Let It Shine Shampoo

BUMBLE AND BUMBLE Let It Shine Conditioner

PAUL MITCHELL Hot Off The Press

PAUL MITCHELL Express Ion Curl

L’OREAL Elnett Satin Hairspray

Miley Cyrus stood out to me because of her classic and mature appearance. I know that she has spent the last two years trying to shed her adolescent image by dressing with more glamour and sophistication than ever before, but not until this week did I feel that she finally looks like she can pull it off. Even though she is still a teenager, I really think she is pulling off this week’s red carpet makeup, hair and dress with the style and grace of a mature young adult. I love the bronze and peach makeup palette that she chose to go with her warm skintone, and the sharply defined brows are striking. Between her eyes and her lips, I can’t decide which is her best feature. Here she emphasizes her eye with a dark black gel liner smudged out slightly at the outer corners, and opts for a very see through neutral pink lipstain and gloss it looks like.

If you would like to replicate Miley’s look try-

STILA Happily Ever After Palette

JOSIE MARAN Lip and Cheek Stain in JIVE

TARTE emphasEYES Amazonian clay waterproof Liner in BLACK

SENNA Form-A-Brow Kit in NEUTRAL

L’OREAL Voluminous False Fiber Lashes in BLACK WATERPROOF

Merry Christmas to all the Cher fans out there!!! Here is a sneak peek behind the scenes of one of my favorite makeup jobs EVER!!! Recently I had the chance to get hired to transform two amazing men into the beloved duo of Sonny and Cher for an annual Christmas Card photo, using my experience and talents as a makeup artist and former female impersonator myself.

Michael and Jack live in a beautiful home in Los Angeles, and have been married for more than 25 years!!! Just the chance to be around such warm, compassionate and loving gay men was a treat for me- but the opportunity to paint Michael up as one of my icons CHER and Jack as SONNY was a dream come true!

The inspiration for the look was classic 70’s Sonny and Cher Variety hour. We even had video clips playing on the laptop as I performed my magic. Personally I remember Cher in the 70’s for 4 distinct physical features- 1. her perfectly groomed and thin eyebrows 2. her St. Tropez tan 3. her amazing false lashes that resembled the legs of a spider 4. & her long jet black, silky straight hair.

It all started with my secret weapon of drag- Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Glue Stick! I use a spatula to shave off a generous amount of glue stick from the tube and smear it directly from the spatula onto the hair of the eyebrows. I repeat this process a few times on each side and use the spatula to press down the glue into the hair without ever touching the brow area with my fingers, which would make a sticky mess. While the glue is drying, I use a full coverage makeup like Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation all over the entire face, except for the eyes and brows. On the eyes and brows I use a waterproof eyeshadow base like M.A.C. Paint Pot in Nubile, these are rich in pigment, waterproof and adhere very quickly to the skin and on top of the glue stick covered brows. After the face is completely painted over, I use a generous amount of Make Up For Ever Super Matte loose powder in #20 with a powder puff to create a flawless satin finish.

I loved creating the deep crease and large lid area of Cher on Michael. She has a large space between her brow and her crease as well as from her crease to her lash line, otherwise known as the eyelid. They are almost the same width in proportion to one another and must be defined as such if you are replicating her look on anyone in your chair. I used approximately 5 matte eye shadow colors all from Make Up For Ever because the density of their pigments are the best, they are extremely long lasting, and most importantly they photograph true to color. I have been using MUFE eye shadows as a staple in my kit for a dozen years. The main Cher colors used here are #28, #3, #95, #76, and #4- these are also kit essential colors for anyone looking to add 5 MUFE shades to their everyday matte eyeshadow collection.  When working on a drag client, where heavy foundations and powders have been utilized to cover up any masculine features, I like to use Make Up For Ever for the brows because they squeeze out of a tube like a concealer and are completely waterproof. I use three different brushes to perfect the brow, a Fine Eyelining Brush by Senna, and a Double Ended Brow Brush Senna to fill in thickness and create the effect of real hair. The lashes are two pairs that I had in my beauty closet glued together with Ardell LashGrip in dark tone, always use the glue that dries black!!! One pair of lashes, the “spider legs” I actually found during Halloween a few years ago and have been anticipating their use up until now.

For contouring Michael’s cheek to resemble the high cheekbones of Cher, I used a new item in my kit that I take everywhere! It is the Three Custom Color Specialists Medium-Dark Concealer Trio and it is perfect for creating shading and contouring of the cheek, nose, temples, chin, etc. The three shades are everything I need for any complexion. If you use it on moist skin, it blends effortlessly. I prefer to layer creams under and over powders so I have to use a combination of sponge and buffing brushes to achieve a more blended overall appearance, but the layering keeps the makeup on longer so that’s my secret. On Michael’s body parts that showed in the final Xmas card image, I chose to use L’oreal True Match Foundation in C7 Nut Brown mixed with a Mineral Illuminating Tint by Youngblood.

Cher’s lips are fuller than the average male, so I overlined Michael’s upper and lower lip lines with Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip in 4C. The pencils are waterproof, have incredible coverage and don’t bleed or feather once applied. I popped a bit of Make Up For Ever White Flash Color Stick onto the center of his bottom lip to overly accentuate the fullness and finished the blending out with Senna Duo in Pink Mink.

Michael (Cher) brought the wig, but it had a blunt bang which reminded me of Cher circa 1965, not 1970.  I had to work some Eufora Fixation Styling Wax into the front part to separate it and set it with Eufora Firm Mist to smooth each side down to blend into the length, giving the wig the illusion of having all one length from root to end. Adhering Jack’s Sonny Bono moustache and sideburns was easy with spirit gum, but trimming the two pieces to fit his face was a little harder, but I believe I did a great job. His Sonny wig also needed some scissor shearing to take it from Scooby Doo’s VELMA to SONNY! lol

I hope you enjoy the behind the scenes pics from my Holiday 2011 Christmas Holiday Glamapalooza!!! Michael and Jack have been dream clients, from the moment I talked with them on the phone, to the moment I walked out their front door when Michael was back in his sweatshirt and flannels about to watch some football on the couch- in FULL CHER FACE cause it was too pretty to take off!!! hahaha These men have found the charm, compassion, and beauty within THEIR souls, and THAT’s what my blog is all about. Happy Holidays

’DON’T PUT IT ON ME, GIRL’ From Kelly to Courtney by Mathias Alan

Recently I had a creative twist handed to me on my weekly series THE SOUP for E Television.  The producers and writers of the show asked me if I could transform one of our associate producers, Kelly Levy, into newly infamous media whore Courtney Stodden. Courtney has been in the press recently because she is a 16 year old girl who just married a 51 year old actor named Doug Hutchison. Their July 2011 tv interview with Lara Spencer on Good Morning America ignited a storm of accusations that the 16 year old Courtney had a few screws loose, or possibly high on some illegal substances. Her eyes rolled back in her head, her neck was loose and flaccid, and her lips puckered in between words seemingly uncontrollably. It’s really hilarious to watch, and her mannerisms are so comedic that an impression of her was destined to pop up on THE SOUP.

The week that we needed to have Courtney Stodden created wasn’t a usual taping night. I normally go into E at around 630pm, get Joel McHale ready by 730pm, tape the show in front of a live audience between 8-9pm, and then the whole team is out by 930. But this particular week Joel was working an extra long days on the set of his NBC show COMMUNITY, so I was told in advance we would be shooting at 9am on Friday. The day before taping, I received an email from our producer Hathaway asking me to be prepared to fix up Kelly as Courtney. I had done this look the first time on her the week before, so I knew what to bring.

I arrived at E to meet Kelly at 715am, she had clean hair and a freshly washed face. I had about an hour to make this happen so I quickly got her hair dirty with some root lifting spray called CATWALK ROOT BOOST, and SESSION SERIES SEA SALT SPRAY both by TIGI. I quick dryed her hair with a blowdryer and my fingers, and then heat set a curl into the crown and temples with a heat protection spray by PAUL MITCHELL called HOT OFF THE PRESS. We were laughing because Kelly shared with me that Courtney herself had tweeted about Kelly’s impression of her in the previous few days! Here’s the quote “Sending all of my exotic love & sexual gratitude to the actress who portrayed me on The Soup last night on E! ;-)” Is that wild, or what? Once Kelly’s hair was up in a pin set, I started on the Courtney Stoddard 1980’s glam eye work. I needed the white frosty lid and brow bone color to really pop on tv, so I layed down an ivory cream eyeshadow base by POISE followed by a blend of the FACE ATELIER eyeshadow shades white, taupe, midnight blue, charcoal, and black. The pitch black cream eyeliner was a key element in really dramatizing the Courtney “too heavy for a 16 year old” eye. I love the new L’OREAL COLOR TRUTH CREAM EYELINERS for a smooth application and long lasting finish. I even smudged the black cream liner under her eyes into her wetline and extended the line out to meet the corner of her lid crease for that “over the top Dynasty drag,” as I like to refer to it. Two pairs of black lashes were glued on before I moved onto her skin. Kelly has a pink undertone in her complexion, but Courtney is much more “California tan” so I have to completely cover up Kelly’s hue with a MINERAL CREAM TO POWDER FOUNDATION and PRESSED POWDER FOUNDATION in two different colors to highlight and contour, both by YOUNGBLOOD. I then like to use the SMASHBOX Halo Hydrating Perfecting Bronzer because it is a loose powder that is very easy to blend and build. Courtney’s overly darkened eyebrows are another key element in her look, and I used SENNA FORM-A-BROW trio in dark to create that perfect shape. The finishing touch was using a combo of OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE COSMETICS LOOSE COLOUR CONCENTRATES IN GLISTEN patted onto her lips to create that frosty lipcolor that is essential to the Courtney Stodden face.

JOEL MCHALE needed to have his “on camera face” applied as well, so I ran into his dressing room once he was done punching up the final script with the writers.  After almost 5 years together, I’ve got his method down to 10 minutes then I’m out the door back to the first makeup room. Once I had completed Kelly’s hair, with a lot of help from my teasing comb and two tracks of blonde extensions, we went into the studio to prep for her walk on with Joel. By this time, Joel has already greeted the audience and told a few jokes about his home life and the set of COMMUNITY and begun the first act of THE SOUP. Normally, I walk into the studio with Joel and make sure his hair is perfect before he jumps out onto the shooting floor, followed by me taking my seat in the front row. But Kelly’s Courtney extensions are so long and cascading that I walked in with her to help Mario the audio guy get her mic’d without tangling the chords into her mane. The audience was on fire that day, and almost riotous when Kelly appeared from the sidelines to enter in as Courtney Stodden. Her impression was hilarious, and she stayed in character and on point the entire time she was in front of the camera with Joel shooting their bit. The cast of SNL would have been laughing at her, she was that GREAT!
