Hello fellow makeup artists and up an coming talent looking for their first big break!
I know it’s a long tough road. I have only accomplishes as much as I have today through YEARS of struggle, set backs, disapointments, and sometimes despair. But it’s my passion and what I was born to do, so I kept my chin up and believed that the magic would happen somehow, someway. Even today, it is a constant give and take with new photographers and publicists. Free work for netowrking, free work for amazing tear sheets, free consultations for potential loyal clients, etc. There is never a guarantee in this business, you just have to keep trying to do your best and become better at what you do with every job.

First and foremost you need to work on your portfolio/website. The ONLY images that should be up for people to see should be tear sheets from actual mags, or tests that you have collaborated on that resemble what you would see in a reputable fashion magazine. There should be no “friends portraits”, “fun going out makeup”, or any models that are not from a modeling agency in the city. Everything about the test should be just like a real job, you need a fashion stylist pulling clothes from boutiques or showrooms, a hairstylist that has worked on editorial before and is looking to update their book, and most importantly a professional photographer that is incredible at shooting beauty or high fashion- depending on the shoot. Research the team being presented to you for a test and don’t be afraid to say “no thank you” when you just don’t think that their talent is up to your standards. Take even more time researching potential photographers, hairstylists, and fashion stylists that you want to work with and reach out to them yourself in the hopes that you can create stunning images and make some great connections.

So, my advice is - spend every week for the next few months pulling together a team and shooting new portfolio work. That is your calling card and that will get you noticed and in the door.

For the past few years, he has been the key makeup/hair artist on E Television’s THE SOUP, with Joel McHale and he gets to work with celebrity guests every week. He is also one of the lead makeup artists on E Television’s hit show THE FASHION POLICE with Joan Rivers, George Kotsiopoulos, Giulliana Rancic, and Kelly Osbourne. He has recently worked as a featured makeup/hair artist for OWN, the STYLE Network, Access Hollywood, Glamour, IN TOUCH Weekly, OK Magazine, and BUNIM MURRAY Productions. Some of his clients have included Ashley Greene (Twilight), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood), Jesslyn Gilsig (Glee), Cote De Pablo (NCIS), Louise Roe (Plain Jane), Melora Hardin (The Office), Sarah Ferguson (The Dutchess of York), Zachary Levi (Thor 2), Nadia Bjorlin (Days of Our Lives), Gretchen Rossi (Real Housewives of Orange County), Monique Coleman (High School Musical), Will.i.am, Joe Manganiello (True Blood), and Kathy Griffin.
