“GET LOUISE ROE’S GLAM LOOK” by Mathias Alan

I’ve had the privilege of working with TV presenter and fashion journalist, Louise Roe (http://www.louiseroe.com/), for over a year.  We met in 2010 on a Style Network segment on which we were booked together.  She absolutely loved the techniques I used to enhance her natural beauty for the camera, and our senses of humor really clicked.  I recently shot promos for her 2nd season of “Plain Jane” which will be airing on MTV International in 66 countries, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z5Ot8AlN1M) and I want to tell you how I created her look.

  1. Louise has normal skin, which I like to overly hydrate before makeup application with an incredible product called LIZ EARLE SUPERBALM.  It has shea butter and rosehips oil to calm dry, itchy skin and it locks in moisture like no other.  I recommend applying the balm to the entire face (avoid the under eye area) and let it saturate slowly into the surface while you work on the eyes for 10-15 minutes.

  2. When I am ready to return to the skin after her eyes are done, I use a primer called TARTE RECREATE SILLICONE FREE PRIMER which has jojoba seed oil, sunflower seed oil and vitamin e to hydrate the skin and lay down a nice base prior to foundation coverage.

  3. One of my favorite foundations for all day wear is REVLON COLORSTAY. I know, I know… drugstore makeup? I’ve been hearing rumors in the industry for years that this foundation is really amazing in that it lasts a very long time on the skin without wearing down, but I was skeptical to try it for almost a decade. The color selection is vast, however there are only a handful of shades that are not too pink and not too grey. Once you find about 6 that work, you can custom blend almost any skin color you want. On Louise, I use #320 True Beige in Normal/Dry and I apply it with a triangle sponge from forehead to neck.  I like stippling the foundation onto the skin for a more complete coverage, and using a foundation brush to smooth it in where I want it to remain more sheer—like on the jawline and into the hairline.

  4. I recently fell in love with POISE CINEMA TOUCH HD CREAM BASE as a concealer and highlighter on the cheekbones, between the brows, middle of the chin, and down the center bridge of her nose. Olive Neutral is a shade slightly lighter than Louise’s overall foundation and the consistency is creamy but dries to a satin finish. I recommend taking a spatula to scoop out the amount of concealer you need for the face and placing it onto the back of your hand. With your finger, warm it up by circling it and emulsifying it on your hand before spot placing it onto the points of the face you need it with that same finger, and blending it in with a synthetic concealer brush.

  5. At this point, I like to contour her cheekbones and temples. I prefer doing this with cream before I set the foundation with powder, and one of the easiest products to contour with is SMASHBOX CAMERA READY CONCEALER in #7.0. The concealer comes in a small portable stick which is shaped perfectly for striping the face where you need the contour to go. #7.0 is a darker shade created for African American skin, but is my best kept secret for use on fair skin as a contouring product. The slip in the product is perfection, gliding across any type of foundation previously applied. I blend in the lines with a combination of the foundation brush and triangle sponges I previously used to apply the foundation.

  6. To set the overall look I use MAKE UP FOR EVER SUPER MATTE LOOSE POWDER in #12 (a fair all around neutral) under her eyes, down her nose, above her lip and on top of her chin—and #20 (a warm all around neutral) across her forehead, cheeks, and jawline. These have honestly been my favorite loose powders since I first worked as a makeup artist in the 90’s for MUFE. They are very soft, not starchy or dry at all. And the fact that they have absolutely no shimmer from ingredients like mica, is key to keeping the skin looking matte and perfect!!!

Stay tuned for an upcoming blog posting about how I finished Louise Roe’s look and what products I love for eyes, cheeks, and lips!!!
